As we pulled up to One Wybelenna Street in Brookfield, Brisbane, my expectations were immediately exceeded.
Nestled calmly amongst the green landscape Australia’s ‘Sunshine State’ Queensland is known for, is an uncompromised sanctuary of indulgence.
We were instantly relaxed from the moment we set foot inside the One Wybelenna day spa. The serene and expansive surroundings are complemented by modernist architecture and chic minimal interiors. Featuring exposed timbers and bluestone walls, the tranquil environment boasts a heavy South American influence that is drawn from the time Heather Sartain - the spa's founder - spent there.
In fact, the uniquely holistic approach of One Wybelenna, which offers a range of Ayurvedic treatments, is a culmination of Heather’s international and extensive experience in the health and wellbeing sector.
Originally trained as an intensive care nurse, Heather later went on to study natural health in both London and Australia. The wife and mother spent four years in Argentina and also has a yoga teaching qualification under her belt, which she obtained to expand her own knowledge of the practice.
Perhaps one of the most striking characteristics of the urban sanctuary she has created is its effortlessness, which rings true in the story of its formation. Heather explains:
“It was originally meant to be a home, and I was project managing the site build. When the project was completed, it quickly became obvious that we had created something special that would convert beautifully to sharing as a luxury boutique day spa.”
Heather’s vision was to create a tranquil escape from the buzz of the city, and she has certainly succeeded. Officially open for business since September 2015, the site is spread across two acres of award-winning garden landscapes and features five treatment rooms, an infinity-edge pool and spa. The retreat itself is a quick 20 minutes drive from Brisbane’s CBD, but once inside you’ll feel a million miles away.
WHAT TO EXPECT: THE PAMPER PROCESS
After being warmly welcomed by two senior therapists, we were lead to our robes and instructed to change into our swimwear for a dip in the magnesium pool and spa. There, we were treated to strawberry champagne in the sunshine and the experience was every bit as luxurious as it sounds.
Once in a pleasantly drowsy state of relaxation, we were lead to the couples treatment room to begin the ‘New Year, New You’ ritual.
Grounded in Ayurveidc principles, all treatments use products from the Subtle Energies range – owned and manufactured organically in Australia.
The 'New Year, New You' ritual puts an indulgent twist on the traditional Ayurvedic principles, commencing with a Rasayana foot soak to begin the head-to-toe relaxation. The massage therapists then used a gentle body brush to provide a deep body exfoliation with all-natural products that left our skin singing. We were guided to private showers, where we rinsed off the exfoliant before returning for the full body 'Blissful Marma Massage'. The all-over treatment certainly lived up to its name, focusing on specific pressure points in line with traditional Ayurvedic principles. The treatment concluded with an Indian head massage and we were both left with an invigorated sense of relaxation - completely calmed but refreshingly energised.
There are a variety of treatments available, which are suited to singles, couples and even small groups for Hen’s parties, birthdays and similar occasions. Seven senior therapists are on hand to administer a variety of holistic treatments from facials to foot massages. For more information about the treatments, see here.
